ARTISTS SHELTER RAFAH

In response to escalating violence in Gaza, the Artists Shelter in Rafah was launched in January 2024 in partnership with Al Kamandjati and the Edward Said Conservatory. This humanitarian initiative aimed to safeguard Palestinian artists' lives and cultural legacy by providing them a safe space to gather and create. The shelter became a refuge for nearly 100 artists and family members, using art as a powerful tool for resistance, healing, and survival amidst conflict.

A SAFE HAVEN FOR ARTISTS BEING MASSACRED

In response to the ongoing genocide in Gaza and Palestine, the Delia Arts Foundation, in collaboration with the Edward Said Conservatory and Al Kamandjati, established the Artists Shelter in Rafah in January 2024. This shelter was created as an emergency safe space for displaced artists and their families, providing physical refuge and a place to continue their creative work amidst the chaos. Located in the Mawasi desert, the shelter offered safety, essential resources, and a nurturing environment where artists could express themselves and support each other through music and artistic activities.

EMPOWERING CREATIVITY AND HEALING

The shelter quickly became home to nearly 100 artists and family members, offering them a vital lifeline during the most dangerous times. Alongside essential survival support, the shelter organized psychosocial activities, especially for children, using art to process trauma and foster resilience. The artistic community continued to resist within the shelter, engaging in performances, teaching, and creative collaborations, ensuring that Gaza's cultural heritage remained a lifeline in crisis amidst an ongoing genocide.

EVACUATION

By July 2024, the deteriorating security situation and the ongoing attacks on the designated safe zone in Rafah forced the evacuation of the Artists Shelter. Despite this, the Delia Arts Foundation remains committed to supporting these displaced artists and their families, advocating for their safety and preserving their cultural contributions to Gaza and beyond. The shelter may no longer exist physically, but its legacy continues in the resilience of the artists who passed through its doors, carrying forward the message that art can flourish even in the darkest times.
